ford mykey dashboardThe Ford MyKey system is an impressive safety feature that helps you instill safe driving habits in your younger drivers. Here’s a quick guide to some of the more impressive things the MyKey feature can do:

Speed Restrictions

A MyKey is a separate key that’s been programmed to set restrictions on how your Ford vehicle operates. One of the most significant of these is the speed restriction feature. You can program your Ford to stop accelerating at a selected speed limited between 65 and 80 miles per hour. Once the driver using the MyKey reaches that speed, pushing down on the accelerator does nothing. The vehicle will alert the driver that they have reached the preselected speed through visual and audible cues.

Audio Restrictions

When the Ford Is being operated with a MyKey, its sound system can only be turned up to 45% of its maximum volume when properly programmed. This is meant to help young and inexperienced drivers avoid distractions while learning how to safely operate the vehicle. The MyKey will also restrict adult content on your satellite radio if you have one. If the front seat passengers don’t have their seatbelts on, the sound system will mute itself until they fasten them.

Fuel and Distance

The MyKey’s primary goal is to promote safe driving habits. One way the MyKey does this is by having your Ford issue visual and audio alerts to remind new drivers of something they need to do. For instance, the low fuel or low charge warning comes on 25 miles sooner with a MyKey than the standard master key. When the MyKey user is done driving, drivers with administrative privileges can look to see how far the restricted driver has traveled.

Safety Systems

When the MyKey is being used, the Ford’s driver will not be able to shut off driver-assist technologies. This includes features such as the blind spot information system, cross-traffic alert, pre-collision mitigation system, and parking assists. If you choose to, you can also program the MyKey to engage traction control, 911 Assist, and Emergency Assist at all times. The driver will not be able to shut these systems off if they only have access to the MyKey.

How Do I Create and Program the MyKey?

To create the MyKey, start the Ford with an unprogrammed key. Using the information display, select Settings on the main menu, and then select MyKey. Select the Create MyKey option on the next screen. From there, you will receive a series of prompts that allow you to program your MyKey.

Once you’ve created the MyKey, you can program it by using your main key to turn on your Ford. Select Settings, then MyKey, and then navigate through the features to choose which you would like the programmed key to use.
